EP Review

One amazing thing about what I do, is every now and again I get the opportunity to discover an artist at the very beginning of their musical journey. Peri Rae, an up and coming singer/songwriter from London is one such artist. It was her debut single ‘Fair Enough’ that captured my attention. From the moment I pressed play her warm composition and gentle voice wrapped itself around me and I knew I had discovered someone special.

Now after several more single releases, Peri has finally dropped the end result of a lot of hard work, tears, and joy. Handing You My Heart is the quintessential debut EP. Each song is coated in care and focuses on the lyrical content, creating a low fi atmosphere that allows Peri’s vocal to wash over the soundscape and shine. Plus each track, though being guitar lead with some beautiful picking patterns carries its own character and personality. From the hint of Americana on stunning single ‘Wildflower’ to the almost fairy tale like sound of ‘High Life’ each track is a breath of fresh air and compliment each other so well.

One of my favourite tracks from this EP is the unreleased ‘Little Steps’. Like the rest of the tracks on the EP it has a gentle power to it that seems to hold you like an old friend leaving home for the first time. Its full of an underlying hope and optimism that really nestles into the atmosphere of the song. Plus once again, Peri and her producing partner and co-writer Jessica Sharman manage to create such a rich sound through the use of vocal harmonies and minimal musical intervention. Every single note and chord is allowed to breath and melt into the next, its just so, well, enchanting to be frank. Honestly it takes me back to days of listening to Jonie Mitchell, Nick Drake, and those artists that played by the rule of less is more.

Overall, for Peri Rae to have created something so rich and full of passion with her debut release int othe world, I can’t even begin to imagine the heights with which she can reach in her songwriting ability. With songs crafted with pure intention, raw honesty, and unguarded love for those that will listen to it, it is clear that Peri has so much to give musically and it al starts here. Between them Peri and Jessica have merely scratched the surface and I cannot wait to discover what comes next as they dive deeper into Peri’s songwriting journey.
