In writing my first review for 2022 I wanted to pick something special, something that stood out for all the right reasons. So when I came across this all out and unshackled new single from the unstoppable force that is Kid Kapichi, I knew I’d found the one. Renowned for their all out live shows and unforgiving attitude towards their social commentary in their songs the band do not disappoint with ‘New England’.

For me the song is an anthem for the frustrated and exhausted in society. Those who have sat and shouted till they were horse as their country dove deeper into divisive waters. Channeling these emotions Kid Kapichi grip you and give you the wake up call you’ve been looking for. From the opening few bars in which the song punches its way into your mind with purpose to the hook I can already see being screamed back to them on stage “….Is it that you can’t change, or that you won’t change….” The bands harsh truth is realised.

Musically the song combines a driving rhythm section with a grimy and cutting synth-guitar riff that powers through the song adding wait to the cutting vocal delivery. By doing this and keeping things choppy and to the point the lyrics have room to breath and be fully realised by the listener. “….Driving around in a German car…” and “….Stop for lunch at a sushi bar….” Two simple lines but when placed into the songs context of the hypocritical nature of modern patriotism they deal a body blow to the narrow minded. This identifying simple and glaring hypocrisy in modern British society is what makes this song so powerful and charged.

Add to this a great delivery and frank featuring from Bob Vyln and the whole thing is just effortless. Even the music video itself pairs perfectly with the tone and theme of the song. By using unique transitions and quirky camera angles yo almost get he feeling like your watching a video directed by Guy Richie in his Lock Stock phase. To be honest even the song has a Brit Gritt Indie film vibe to it, not that many people might know what that means, but for those of you who do, it really does doesn’t it.

Overall by kicking off their year with this release that isn’t just lighting in a bottle but the storm that broke it, Kid Kapichi have made a statement….We’re back and we’re fired up.
