Figure it Out
Parlour Suns
Punchy and genuine are two words that can go someway to describing the latest offering from rising pop-rock outfit Parlour Suns. Coming off the back of their come back single ‘Embers’, ‘Figure it Out’ is a continuation of the bands new found energy and passion for their own sound. While their previous release tackled the emotions of getting back up and forging ahead, in contrast, ‘Figure it Out’ comes from an angle of hesitation and the self doubt that can come from making life changing decisions. Despite the narrative of the track focusing on on the contemplation of ending a relationship, the overall message is one that is very relatable for a wide range of people.
This track fully embraces its inspiration and makes no apologise with its content. Lyrically it perfectly captures the inner torment and self doubt that can be found when contemplating ending a long term relationship. “….I can walk, and stay out all night, but it takes a lot of work for me to speak what’s inside my mind….” A great line that captures the frustration of being able to seemingly make easy choices but still struggling to speak out when its important. The song refers back to this inner battle later in the song as well, creating a running theme. By doing this however they set the chorus up as a sort of unleashing of this frustration, as though the narrative is emphasising at these moments the battle is at its peak. ‘….I’ve just got to figure it out….”
Musically, the chorus explodes with driving guitars and bass, and a splashing drum beat that effortlessly lifts the track from its palm muted verses, again, emphasising the shift in emotion from frustration and hopelessness to more of a determination and more certain feeling. This pattern of using their music to create more depth to their lyrics was noticeable in ‘Embers’ and is slowly becoming a staple of their songwriting. One other piece of the composition of the verse that stood out to me were the chords used in the verse. As the song kicks in the chords feel quite, well, minor in tone but then as you think its about to get lower to round off the progression the chord lifts to a more major feel and really hooks you into listening.
Overall, Parlour Suns have once again proven their embracing of their new direction. Channeling the punchy pop rock of the early 00’s into a contemporary world the band are going from strength to strength and its only their second single. With a new found confidence and fixed gaze on their horizon we’ve only seen the beginnings of the music Parlour Suns can create.
