Try, a simple word whose three letters can hold a wealth of meaning to so many people. So why not take this simple word, envelop it in a personal context, and then write that story into a well thought out musical arrangement? Well, West Midlands based, Kerry Smyth did just that…and what a result.
Being the 3rd single released from her upcoming album, Away With You (Due for release on Friday 6th March) , Try continues to showcase Kerry’s songwriting talent and confidence in her own style. Treading the line between Easy Listening and Folk/Pop, she finds a delicate balance of both in this single by combining an upbeat acoustic rhythm with a simple Piano pattern underneath, bringing both a hard and soft texture to the song.
To add to this contrast, she substitutes the sound of a full drum kit for the distinctive patter of hand played percussive drums, performed by Dan Guest. Mixed in with this constant beat is a gentle bass line that slots perfectly into the song and is provided by Ben Drummond. Both these collaborators feature across Kerry’s upcoming album and previous singles, lending their talents to create the perfect ground work for Kerry’s guitar and vocals to build on.
In listening to her vocal on this track, they are effortless and comfortable. Throughout the song you can tell she is engaged with her own lyrics and chooses her melodies with care. Also worth noting about the song is the chorus. With its optimistic tone and lyrics it is the heart of the song and really drives home the message behind Try. It does this by including some great lyrics such as “…strive for what we hope for…” and “…we’ve got to free our minds…”.
As well as the lyrics, musically the chorus emulates the essence of the song as with each repeat the musical layer grows with the inclusion of harmonies and keyboard. The resulting sound then seems to mirror Kerry’s own building of self confidence. This is worth noting as the song itself was written as a type of personal encouragement for Kerry, during a dark patch that many aspiring singer/songwriters can find themselves in from time to time.

Armed with this song however Kerry found a second wind and threw herself into creating her music and following her passion. Now she hopes that the song can do for other people what it did for her.

Overall the song is a beautiful piece of inspirational writing and is a definite listen for anyone who may find themselves at a crossroads. It is also a great addition to any collection and is so easy and enjoyable to listen to. From its gentle musical arrangement, to its heartfelt lyrics this song will leave you wanting to hear more from Kerry Smyth.
